Development of co-continuous structure in liquid crystalline polyester

We investigated liquid crystallization of liquid crystalline polyester BB-5 during isothermal annealing by digital high-fidelity microscope and light scattering. A liquid crystalline spherical domain having a radius of micrometers appeared by annealing at around 180 °C. The domain grew dendritically in all directions. Neighboring liquid crystalline regions coalesced and then interconnected. The interconnected structure changed to a co-continuous two-phase structure with increasing ordering of the liquid crystalline phase, and the interface between the liquid crystalline phase and the isotropic phase became smoother over time. Liquid crystallization stopped before volume filling the whole space, and the liquid crystalline phase and isotropic phase coexisted. The liquid crystalline region became narrower with an increase in the temperature of the liquid crystallization. Such structural development is different from the liquid-liquid phase separation via spinodal decomposition, and it may be attributed to the segregation of non-liquid crystallizable low molecular weight molecules from the growth front by fractionation of the molecular weight distribution during the liquid crystallization in terms of the instability of the diffusion-controlled interface.

The Development of Color Categories in Two Languages: A Longitudinal Study.

This study unites investigations into the linguistic relativity of color categories with research on children's category acquisition. Naming, comprehension, and memory for colors were tracked in 2 populations over a 3-year period. Children from a seminomadic equatorial African culture, whose language contains 5 color terms, were compared with a group of English children. Despite differences in visual environment, language, and education, they showed similar patterns of term acquisition. Both groups acquired color vocabulary slowly and with great individual variation. Those knowing no color terms made recognition errors based on perceptual distance, and the influence of naming on memory increased with age. An initial perceptually driven color continuum appears to be progressively organized into sets appropriate to each culture and language. Russian underwater tunnels in the system of international transportation ways

Sustained world economic development trends characteristic with international trade annual growth rate of 7–8% along with considerable dynamics in the interregional goods circulation sphere on one hand and vast territory of Russia combined with a relatively developed railway network on the other hand provide a unique chance for this country to arrange land transportation routes alternative and competitive in comparison with existing marine routes. Construction of rail tunnels seems to be most efficient means for transportation corridors to cross-wide water areas like Nevelsky Strait (10.5 km) between the mainland and the Sakhalin Island in Russia, Bering Strait (92 km) between Chukotka Peninsula (Russia) and Alaska (USA). The tunnels construction conditions, structures and technologies planned to be used are considered in the paper.
